‘Seeing Through’ Astrology

Seeing through colored orbs

Archetypal images give shape to human understanding. Hillman referred to this as “seeing through” ideas and images.

A mythology always presents a system of inter-related myths. We recognize each character, or each god, or each planet, as an archetypal presence: that is, an idea or image common to human experience. As these characters interact, it shapes and colors the story. For instance, Venus (the goddess or the planet) signifies the presence of love (archetypal idea). However, Venus interacting with Saturn (old age, maturity, limitation, restriction) tells a very different story than Venus interacting with Mercury (youth, humor, inconstancy, swiftness).

The zodiac is a system of inter-related archetypes, and provides an excellent framework to inspire archetypal awareness as we journey around the year. Taken altogether, the system of astrology is a picture of wholeness. Each astro-archetype demonstrates an aspect of human experience, which you can recognize showing up in your own life, and showing up in the world-at-large. They are kind of the “building blocks” that make up our lives. Everyone has their own unique combination of these basic “blocks.” It’s a fantastic way to see how we really are all “alike but different.”
